The student radio station, WQAQ, has much in store this upcoming year. WQAQ wants to become the station that Quinnipiac students listen to for news, sports and, of course, the pure enjoyment of music. photo courtesy of Matt Andrew WQAQ General Manager D.J. Bernat said WQAQ plans to organize many events in 2008.

WQAQ launched for this year on Monday, September 22 at noon.

"This station continues to grow every year," said senior broadcast journalism major Mike Silverman. Silverman is one of the station's Sports Managers. "It's really cool. Most colleges do not have this sort of thing."

According to Bernat, on October 11 WQAQ will sponsor a three on three basketball competition. For $10, teams composed of five people can compete, with the top three teams winning prizes.

Bernat mentioned other events, "On November 14 we are hosting a charity event called 'Music for Meals' at The Space in Hamden. There will be four or five local bands, plus one national band performing."

Bernat said his goal for this year was to "create a more personal, family feeling for the station. We want to bring QU students together with music and important events on and off of campus."

Web site manager Corey Shuster gave WQAQ.com a major upgrade. The website was completely redesigned by Shuster, and a new program enables the current DJ on air to send the name of the artist and song currently playing. "The main web page also has a link that goes to the main stream where you can listen to the current music playing on the radio," said Bernat.

Programming Manager Eric Berman, a junior English major, seemed pleased to see the launch. "It's exciting. It's always great to go back on air."

Jacquie Fricano, one of the News and PR managers, hopes to include students in this year's important news events. "We have what are called 'Issue Reports'," Fricano said. "We talk about important issues, and have students come on the air and give their opinions, such as the upcoming election. Everyone's voice should be heard."

Michael Feldstein, the Business Manager for WQAQ, handles the station's advertising. "Small businesses have come to support WQAQ because of our strong and animated attitude for music and news. The advertisements for these businesses could be found on the WQAQ website," said Feldstein.

WQAQ seems poised to take strides this year, with exciting events and new website capabilities.
