WQAQ DJ of the Week: “Tales From the Geek Side”

"Ding, ding, ding…you are listening to tales from the bell side. Just kidding folks. You are listening to ‘Tales from the Geek Side' on WQAQ, your number one place for…WQAQ!"

DJ Peter Corkery, a freshman broadcast journalism major, provides listeners every Tuesday morning with an interesting collection of talk, a blend of techno/video game influenced music and of course conversations with WQAQ's bell and sometimes himself.

"'Tales from the Geek Side' is one of the best and most original shows on WQAQ," WQAQ General Manager Eric Berman said. "Peter always manages to surprise us as listeners with his off-beat "nerdy news" and hilarious rants on topics ranging from politics to Captain America."

Corkery aims to both surprise and please his listeners with a mix of a little bit of everything.

"My goal is to show people stuff they don't know. I want to introduce the obscure into mainstream," Corkery said.

Corkery is definitely reaching his goal. In one show, listeners who tuned in were able to hear Corkery's rendition of the "Batman" character the Joker in the classic speech where he recruited those who have a psychotic side. Corkery remained in character for a solid five minutes. You can also expect a few live freestyle raps on various topics. Aside from music and comics, Corkery also discusses films, most recently the newly released film "The Losers," based on an original comic book.

He even hosts guests. A few weeks ago a mysterious visitor, "Dr. Oblivion," spoke about taking over the world and "Tales from the Geek Side." Following a slow motion fight scene, sound effects included, Corkery luckily defeated Dr. Oblivion by sending him through a portal.

Although the semester is coming to a close "Tales from the Geek Side" will continue through next year providing a new dose of "nerdy news" and character personas each week.
