Newly remodeled and making its transformation from Jack Rabbit Slims, the former under-aged booze palace at 3000 Whitney Ave. has morphed into a new bar and grill with a small town ambiance. Within walking distance of Side Street and Griff’s Chicken Shack, the quaint saloon that is Lenny’s Bar & Grill offers more than just a great location.
On a recent night out at Lenny’s, Jim Conroy, a senior at Quinnipiac, said he is a fan of the wings, great deals and friendly atmosphere at Lenny’s.
“I even get to have control over the [TV] remote,” Conroy said. “It’s definitely a townie-type bar.”
I decided to check it out one Saturday night. It wasn’t crowded, but after entering, I realized that the bar seems to have a lot to offer its diverse customer base. From college kids to construction workers, everyone is welcome at Lenny’s.
“We have a very inconsistent type of business,” said owner Lenny Corto. Corto and business partner Dave Somberg opened the bar in September 2009. The two completely remodeled the inside and added daily food specials and a lunch menu, making food a focal point of the new joint.
“Kyle Rohberg, a four-star chef who previously worked at P.F. Chang’s, is a full time cook here at Lenny’s,” Corto said.
Specials include free wings on Monday and Tuesday from 8:30-10 p.m. and Fridays from 4-6 p.m. Specials on Saturday include a pitcher of beer and a basket of wings for $10. Lenny’s also offers Dinners Express, take-out and accepts QCard.
“I come here about two times a week for the free wings,” said Christopher Fletcher, a senior political science major.
While Lenny’s is all-ages during the day, it is strictly a 21-plus bar after 8 p.m.
“The bar that was here before us was known for underage drinking, so we try to be proactive and really do not tolerate fake ID’s,” Corto said.
The owners of Lenny’s are currently working to plan menu specials for St. Patrick’s Day.
