HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's basketball team earned its sixth straight win Monday night against Mount St. Mary's at the TD Bank Sports Center.
The Bobcats were nothing short of impressive on the court, scoring a season high of 89 points, defeating the Mountaineers by 16. The Bobcats did what they have done what best this season. They played tough defense, and everyone contributed offensively.
"We've been really consistent from the beginning," Assistant coach Mountain MacGilliray said. "The things the team is doing, we're gonna try to repeat them over and over again."
The Bobcats had six players in double figures Monday night, including red-shirt junior Felicia Barron who scored a team high of 19 points, shooting 8-12 from the field. Along with her 19 points, Barron played the role of ball hawk. She racked up 5 steals, adding to the teams total of 11. The Bobcats scored 24 points off of 19 caused turnovers.
On the first play of the game, sophomore forward Camryn Warner intercepted a pass in the paint, leading to a transition layup. Defense leading to points was Monday night's theme.
Lately, it seems like the only challenge for the Bobcats is to be sure they do not take their foot off the gas pedal.
"We just got to keep playing defense as hard as we could, and not let them get easy baskets," Barron said. "That's the main thing. Our defense is great so with that it's really hard for teams to come back. If we keep doing that we're gonna be fine."
The Mountaineers ran a bit of a Princeton style offense, but backdoor cuts and 3-point shots proved no match for the Bobcats.
"Our post players know that they got to be the relief on those backdoor cuts," MacGilliray said. "It's really hard to throw a backdoor pass when someone is in your shorts pressuring the basketball."
With 7:05 remaining in the first half, freshman guard Jasmine Martin knocked down a 3-point field goal from the corner. Her basket brought the Bobcats lead to double figures where it stayed for the rest of the game. In the beginning of the second half the Bobcats led by 30 points, their largest lead of the game.
Sophomore guard Kayla Grossett and junior guard Sydney Henderson of the Mountaineers scored a combined 44 points. The Bobcats bench scored a total of 46 points, more than the Mountaineer duo and a little more than half of what the Bobcats team total was.
When they were not stealing, blocking shots, or rebounding, the Bobcats were busy on the offensive end of the court playing selfless basketball. The Bobcats shot 58 percent from the field. Off of 32 shots made, 24 were assisted.
"The team's just together now," Coach MacGilliray said. "They know where each other are, they're making the extra pass, it just clicked. Young kids get older, team bonds throughout the year and we're kind of hitting are stride."
The Bobcats move to 16-5 on the season and 8-2 in the NEC. The Mountaineers drop to 8-13 on the season and 4-6 in the NEC.
The Bobcats start up a three game road trip Feb 4 at Monmouth University at 3 pm.
