It’s the week before finals and one would be hard pressed to find a time where the Arnold Bernard Library is more packed.
The library attracts different students for different reasons. For some, it’s the subtle quietness and soft surroundings which make it an easier place to study. For others, it’s just the need to be out of their rooms where the distractions of their everyday life will be absent for a few hours.
“Peace and quiet dude, peace and quiet,” sophomore broadcast journalism major Jeff Ohlson said. “That is the only reason I go to the library. I live in Whitney Village, so it’s not like I’m going to go to the library just to hang out for an hour, got to bring mad work, get it all done.”
Some students have other reasons to be in the library—reasons that may not be considered very studious.
“I basically used to go there last semester a lot when my roommate’s girlfriend would visit,” junior English major Jesse Gaccione said. “It was basically a weekend spent at the library.”
Many students are attracted to the library because it is one of the quietest spots on campus.
“I just love how quiet the library is. I mean my room is quiet when my roommate isn’t around but it’s not this quiet,” junior psychology major Nailah Abdul-Rahman said. “This is a different kind of quiet. For finals it’s the only place I can even begin to study.”
Even though Arnold Bernhard is packed with students looking for a quiet place to study, many bring along their own entertainment.
“I bring along my iPod to listen to classical music. It’s proven that listening to composers like Mozart helps you concentrate better,” Ohlson said.
Despite the quiet surroundings, the library isn’t without its distractions.
“If I go to the library and sit at a desk with a computer I find myself wasting so much time looking at random people’s Facebook[s],” Abdul-Rahman said. “I don’t know why I do it, it’s like an addiction.”
Everyone has their own reasons for frequenting the Arnold Bernard Library and no matter what the reason, the library is proving to be one of Quinnipiac’s most valuable assets for students during finals week as it is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
