Quinnipiac and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference have bid to host a Men’s Frozen Four in Orlando, Florida. If granted the request, the two would host the event at the Amway Center in 2015, 2016, 2017, and/or 2018.
While the idea hosting the event 1,000 miles from campus, in a non-hockey city, in conjunction with a non-hockey conference confuses many, Athletics Director Jack McDonald defends the plan.
“As a national championship it gives schools significant exposure,” said McDonald. “There’s no financial risk to Quinnipiac but not much of a financial reward. Quinnipiac’s reward is exposure.”
Though the event is 1,000 miles from campus, McDonald says Quinnipiac couldn’t host the Frozen Four near Connecticut. No venue in the state is large enough to host the tournament, and hosting in New York would be too expensive.
“We would love to host at Madison Square Garden but hotel prices are too high in New York City,” said McDonald. “Four or five nights in New York City would be very expensive and most fans wouldn’t be able to afford it.”
Frozen Four fans come from all around the country, meaning they need airfare no matter where the event is. Orlando hotels would be cheaper than New York hotels because of Orlando’s tourist attractions. The popular vacation spot has many types of hotels, from Crowne Plaza to Motel 6.
While Orlando isn’t a hockey town, home to no NHL teams, McDonald says the Frozen Four would succeed there.
“The Frozen Four has a tremendous following and always a close-to-capacity crowd. It was a success in Tampa, and can be successful and sustainable anywhere.”
McDonald also said the bid is in conjunction with the MAAC because the conference was looking for an outstanding hockey team to host with. The MAAC approached Quinnipiac about hosting a Frozen Four but the ECAC did not.
